aNorange Collective

ABOUT

aNorange Collective is the artistic collaboration between choreographers / performers Iris Boer (NL) and Sebastian Pickering (DK/CAN).

Working within the realms of contemporary dance and physical theatre, the duo creates performances and videos based on still images. Common elements in their work includes a play between the theatrical and the abstract, absurdity, humour and strong visual aesthetics.

Iris and Sebastian are both active and founding members of Rotterdam-based dance company and production platform Lazy Susan & co.

During their final year in school at ArtEZ University of the Arts, Iris and Sebastian started exploring a common interest in choreographing, taking inspiration in photography and the use of still images in movement and on stage. Through several residencies, workshops and performances, this remains the their choreographic method – from movement tasks to visual and conceptual inspiration. Together they’ve created 3 theatre performances: Shoot to Still (19), Amazing Adventures of Unfitting Images (19) and Astonishing Adventures of an Accidental Image (20), as well as a number of sketches and presentations, performing and teaching in Netherlands, Denmark, Bulgaria, Portugal, Belgium and Germany.

aNorange’s performances are movement based, but play with the contrast between abstract dance and recognisable theatrical images, often hinting multiple interpretations.

From imitating a photograph and playing with the movement idea of stopmotion, to connecting unrelated images through movement, the play between movement and stillness is a core element throughout both the creative process and performances so far. Iris and Seb enjoy the idea that context can change the perception of an image – that by changing the surrounding, the speed and the chronology of images or movement phrases, the interpretation of this may change completely. This often creates an absurd environment, where recognisable images appear and disappear often creating moments of human connection and humorous images, before returning to a more abstract setting.

Together with 9 other colleagues, Iris and seb founded LAZY SUSAN & CO., a larger company and production platform for contemporary dance in Rotterdam (NL). Besides using LSC as a platform to produce and sell their performances, Iris and Sebastian both take an active role in the productions of LSC’s other members, both as performers, artistically and administratively.
